Cotton is a moderately strong natural fibre that is soft, airy, comfortable, and has no lustre. It too has good acceptability for any colour of dye, has a good comforting feel, but does not drape as well as silk. It also keeps the body cool in summer and warm in winter. The Importance Of Fashion Trends

Fashion trends come and go, but a good fashion sense stays with you forever. Different people have different tastes in fashion, and while you may not always agree with them, they own up to their fashion sense with confidence. This is what makes a big difference between a fashion sense and fashion trend.

Fashion trends dictate that we wear whatever is in season otherwise we could be rudely stared at or whispered about in public, or worse, we can be cited as examples of what a fashion faux pas is. While to some extent we are compelled to follow the norms in fashion, it doesnt necessarily follow that we lose our own sense of style in the process.

Celebrities for instance, know that they are being judged by more than half the worlds population by what they wear on what occasion, and for this reason alone, they turn to famous designers to dress them up in the latest threads in fashion. However, you will also notice that most of them incorporate their own sense of style into these fashion trends, and they are quite successful at it, too.

The Latest Fashion Trends

Nevertheless, it gives you some sort of security and peace of mind even knowing that what you are wearing is within the agreeable style of fashion for a particular season. Perhaps there is something to be said about the false sense of security that this kind of approval provides.

But on the other hand, it is actually not so much as seeking approval as the current trend really IS appealing to the public. After all, fashion trends are there not only to dictate to us what to wear but more so to show us different comfortable styles that we can choose from if we fancy wearing them.

Fashion trends take a lot of factors into consideration such as the weather, season, comfort, and lifestyle. So in reality, fashion trends are there to help people decide which one suits them best and which ones they can go without.

Create Your Style

If you go with the latest trends and use your imagination or creativity to make it your own style, you might find that theres more to your wardrobe than only one look. You can also incorporate your mood into what youre going to wear.

You can exude playfulness or show your sexy side on some occasions and then be a little conservative on other days. Remember that fashion trends are more of guidelines on what you can wear for whatever occasion.

For instance, if youre stumped for ideas on what to wear to a formal event thrown by your company or you dont know what to wear to a luau, fashion trends can help you solve this mystery. You can even ask fashion gurus who write in fashion magazines about advices on proper attires for every occasion.

After all, you wouldnt want to be caught dead wearing flip-flops to your cousins wedding reception or jeans to a beach party, do you?

Melbourne Fashion Photography and Location Scouting

As a Melbourne Fashion Photographer I come across a lot of photography locations as well as clients seeking bizarre and new locations for their next shoot. The city of Melbourne is a city of roughly 3 to 4 million people and is quite young in comparison to many European cities. The architecture reflects this and it can sometimes be a challenge finding location for clients that fill certain criteria that is more suited to Europe. With fashion photography we often try and sell a story. The photos needs to convey a mood and feelings. It is the photographers that need to -dress up- the clothes with something more. Fashion photography then draws on sets, locations, props and models to create something that will engage the viewer and the clients know this. A sun-filled morning in an old house may speak about softness, comfort and natural beauty, whereas or cold and stark warehouse might convey strength or a darker edge.

Melbourne has warehouses and sun filled houses. What we lack is the castles, the mountains and the snow. We lack some of the charm of the 18th century architecture which photographs beautifully. Sure, locations exist but they are usually photographically exhausted by many photographers and clients. We do have beaches, some forests, lakes and, you guessed it, more beaches.

So the search for fashion photography locations in Melbourne can be quite tedious, especially when it comes to building and interior locations. We don’t have many Hollywood-Hills style mansions or Scottish Castles. Luckily location scouts have made this easier by embarking on tracking down every last photo opportunity through manually scouting, word of mouth and sometimes even set-building them from scratch. I find the fact that Australia in general being so large, it can be time consuming finding locations so these photography location scouts can be invaluable and great time savers.

Ultimately, if time is on your side I would suggest scouting the inner suburbs of Melbourne yourself. Take photos, explore and get a feel for the vast range of alleys and warehouses available to photograph. Travelling into rural areas might see you only visiting one or two photo spots before realising you have spent the entire day driving.

Fashion clients budgets are definitely not what they used to be so finding locations quickly and cost effectively is important and as a fashion photographer I need to help my clients do this fast. Scouting companies is what I use in most cases. Occasionally I will explore myself if it is local or time permits to venture further. Of course, whilst on fashion assignments it’s always important to keep an eye out and take lots of photos of your surroundings, not just in Melbourne but where ever you venture. You never know what you might see and when you might need it.

If you are a client looking at shooting in Melbourne I would suggest a local photographer who has ties with good location agents to help you out.

Luxury to India

Industry feels the concept of ‘Make in India’ is the right direction to take, to make India the powerhouse that it can be. But for the initiative to be a success, issues of tax benefits, single window clearances, heavy duties on imports, imparting of skill-based training to the labour force and development of infrastructure need to be sorted out first. Manisha Almadi Midha spoke to head honchos of some Indian brands and upcoming fashion designers for their take on the initiative.

Monica Oswal

Top 5 steps to make ‘Make in India’ a success

  • Manufacturers should get support on relaxation of taxes.
  • Heavy duty on imports should be reduced.
  • Emphasis on quality of production.
  • To get skilled labour, government should promote imparting of skill-based training.
  • Manufacturers should be provided with easy finance schemes at low interest.

Top 5 hurdles in ensuring ‘Make in India’ is a success

  • Procurement of licence.
  • Cheap and skilled labour/workforce availability.
  • Basic facilities at Special Economic Zones (SEZ).
  • Unavailability of low cost transport.
  • Export policies

India hosts its own fashion weeks in Delhi and Mumbai which seem to be getting bigger and better every year. The names are getting known as well – Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahiliani, Ritu Kumar, Manish Malhotra, Ritu Beri, Manish Arora, Satya Paul, Rocky S — the list just keeps growing.

Market Size

The Indian fashion industry is expected to reach US$ 400 million in a couple of years with vigorous growth of over 10 per cent year-on-year. While this is tiny compared to the global industry, it is not too bad for an industry in this stage of infancy.

The reason India’s fashion industry will have a bright future is that it has a large young population. This, combined with increasing disposable incomes, has led to an increase in consumerism. So, those who can afford are looking for high quality and originality. They love brand names. Hence, we can say that the future of fashion industry in India looks promising.

Potential

This industry offers an abundance of opportunities for artistic, hard-working and enthusiastic people. The scenario for fashion design graduates looks good, thanks to the enormous and still increasing demand for stylish clothes and the quantity of exports.

After successful accomplishment of the graduate course, one can be self-employed. On the other hand, several garment store chains, export houses, leather companies, textile mills, boutiques, fashion show organizers and jewellery houses recruit professionals fascinated with a career in fashion designing.
